During the painting process I began making changes such as removing his monk hood, replacing it with long stringy hair, added a scar, tossed in some armor, added the metal band on his head, etc.
This was the final result.
Will he survive the challenges ahead?
And most importantly....Why is he carrying so much crap?

A while back I visited a small local pub (more like a dive) with some friends. The inside of this place looked very much like the interior of a 17th century ship. The walls had thickly laquered, dark brown wood panels, studded with black iron bolts. There were rusty antiques and dusty nautical devices hanging from every inch of the place (Probably should have had a tetanus shot before entering). Old diving suits, vintage sea piantings with overly ornate frames, wooden mermaid statues hanging from the walls, and brass lined portholes with lime green windows. The dimly lit, lime green lighting in the place also gave it an old world feel.
As I was sipping my beer I was expecting a giant tentacle to come crashing through one of the por tholes and snatch away one of regulars that was sitting at the bar.

Anyhow, the look and lighting of this pub was the main inspiration for this piece. I wanted the style to look like some painting you might see hanging inside one of these old ships.

The illustration was started many months back, but I put it on hold for a while. Just recently I decided to finish it up.
Rather than go with a freshly dead zombie I opted for one that has been dead for a while and was nice and gooey.
The original version of this image I actually created a little over a year ago, shortly after I got my first Wacomn tablet. I recently dug up the image and nearly puked all over my shoes when I saw how awful the brushstrokes and other elements looked. So I went ahead and completely revamped the painting.
I'll probably dig this version up a year from now and repaint it again.
The piece was inspired by a certain part in the Lord of the Rings books.
